Can You Use Dryer Lint For Tinder?
Yes! Survival Life takes a look at it. They also talk about using used sheets of fabric softeners as tinder.
My son and I just tried the dryer lint and it does work, but not as well as 100% cotton balls. Not far off it though and if you’re harvesting dryer lint for free, it’s worth it.
Another difference though, is you can’t really dip the dryer lint into Vaseline like you can cotton balls. Well, at least it didn’t work for me. The dryer lint just didn’t hold together as well as the cotton balls. If you’re not familiar with why doing that is important, here is Survival Life’s post on that.
We don’t use the sheets of fabric softener, so I don’t know how well that works.
Another thing you can do with the dryer lint, is to stuff it into used cardboard toilet rolls. That way you have a convenient way to gather and store your dryer lint. One tube of that would probably last you a long time on a camping trip. In addition, a couple of tubes of this and you can use it as a fire lighter for your BBQ. A word of caution thought, it does stink a bit.
This may seem a bit extreme to some folks, but to others it’s just another way to recycle.
