If you’re like me, you spend some time in January planning for the new year – including prepping. I start by looking at where I’m at, what my goals are, and then I take a look at the world situation to make sure I’m making the right plans for what’s coming. So, what’s coming?
Well, if I knew that I’d be a very rich man! While it might not be possible to see the future clearly, we can look at what’s going on, compare it to past situations, and come up with our “best guess” ideas. Since there’s a lot going on shall we say, it might be a good idea to break things down into a few categories.
The big news lately, at least in America and the UK, has been floods. Here in Scotland we’ve seen floods like we haven’t seen in years! It rains a lot here in Scotland, but lately it hasn’t stopped for weeks. The forecast for the next week? Rain. So, what’s up and what’s coming?
The experts blame El Nino. The Weather Channel defines El Nino this way:
“El Niño is an anomalous, yet periodic, warming of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. For reasons still not well understood, every 2-7 years, this patch of ocean warms for six to 18 months.”
They also predict this El Nino will be as strong as the 1997-98 one. What this means for you and I is a lot of unsettled weather – more floods, hurricanes and tornadoes – and the need for a lot of prepping! So if you’re in a flood prone area, you may want to bulk up on items you need for a flood. If you’re not in a flood prone area, you might want to look up the history for your area. This year you may become a flood prone area!
Recent so-called “stress tests” on banks in the US and Europe, have shown banks are still nowhere near ready for another 2008 type financial collapse. The world is still recovering from the effects of that collapse and another one so soon could be even worse. Worse still is China’s faltering economy. This has a ripple effect across the world resulting in job losses as China imports less and less raw materials. And China is just one of the world’s problem areas.
All you have to do is scan the headlines to see the world is engulfed in turmoil. With President Obama in a lame duck situation, the world situation would seem to only get worse in 2016. The world being the interconnected place it is these days, no matter where you live, world events are bound to effect you.
What I’m doing.
I’ll tell you what I’m doing and then I’ll ask what you’re doing so we can compare. I’m new at this prepping and have a lot to learn.
First I too a look at my situation; where I live; my family composition; our budget and what might affect me first and the most. Based on that, it was clear for my situation I needed back ups for everything.
So, in addition to my normal storage of food and water, I got a generator, a propane heater, a propane stove safe for indoor use and I bought Amateur Radio equipment to cover all bands. I am a licensed Ham. I stocked up on fuel for the generator, the propane stove and heater.
I doubled my emergency cash fund, doubled my efforts to pay off some small debts and got a credit card. Yeah, I know the credit card goes against my financial plans but I don’t plan to use it. I only got it for the short-term until I get my finances where I want them.
I’ve got my family a lot more involved in prepping and I’m trying to get my friends to do it as well. And I’ve made detailed plans for more prepping.
I’ve made a list of the food and quantities of each to stock up on; I’ve made a list of equipment I need and I’m looking at ways to “harden” my property.
